Abstract
Purpose: This study was intended to provide fundamental data to suggest the future directions for further development of domestic medical informatics, by comparative analysis of the research trends and changes of medical informatics in Korea and the United States of America.

Materials & Method: The Journal of the Korean Society of Medical Informatics (JKSMI) and the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA) were selected. All the articles in the JKSMI were collected except those published on the supplements from 1995 to 2006. Collected articles were compared and analyzed for details of the studies such as the number of authors, major of author, a position, types of the study, Key words, and area of the study.

Results: In the Journal of the Korean Society of Medical Informatics, a study was normally issued as original work (89%), which was also the most common type (42.4%) in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. The most frequently appeared keyword was ¡°Internet" in both journals. In the Journal of the Korean Society of Medical Informatics, common research areas were ¡°Clinical Information System", ¡°Nursing Information System", ¡°Consumer Health Informatics", ¡°Biomedical Imaging". In the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, common research areas were ¡°Clinical Information System", ¡°Standards", ¡°Decision Support", ¡°Health Education", ¡°Patient Records and Cards".

Conclusions: For further development of medical informatics in Korea, many studies encompassing diverse research area and using various research method should be carried out.
